Because bush hospitals in Africa didn't sterilize their syringes from an unknown disease we're supposed to be sceptical of your own doctor's advice? Give me a break.

JF
God says that vengeance is His--and His alone. Nor should we harbour hate, because as the apostle Paul wrote we shouldn't let the sun go down on our anger. This world is often unfair and it does no good to dwell on the bad breaks. But, it is unwise to "forgive" those who really wrong you and so let them wrong you or someone you care about once again. Does one learn from an experience? Or does one go through life allowing someone to repeatedly victimize them or others in their circle of friends? I've seen that too! Genuine forgiveness and reconciliation cannot be achieved through wishful thinking or other mind games operated by just one party. It requires two parties: the offendor and the offendee. Just like making a covenant with God requires two parties. However, if you are speaking about forgiving yourself for making a mistake by trusting another person who betrayed you, then yes, most certainly forgive your error and move on. The world is full of users and abusers. Their ultimate judgement is the prerogative of Jesus Christ. Yours, Jeff

Hi Jeff
I understand your comments on "not forgiving" the unrepentant, but I am reminded of the case of people who are wronged who go through life hating those who wronged them -- and it consumes their thoughts and attitude. Often the offender, goes through life without giving the offence a second thought. In cases such as this - eg an unfaithful spouse who breaks up a marriage, or a victim of violence, etc -- is not the act of forgiveness something to "set them free" from the hurt or bitterness or desire for vengeance? It is certainly nicer to forgive someone "repentant", but is forgiveness - even of the unrepentant - not a healing force for those who are wronged?

On the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, I'm sure most of us remember where we were when we first heard about the attack. I certainly do! Once our friend phoned us we could not pull ourselves away from the TV until well after the second tower fell. It was a devastating moment. Ten years later some news comments started us thinking about the issue of forgiveness in relationship to the perpetrators of this crime. Here are our thoughts:
